Texas Holdem Poker - How to Play
The game of poker comes in a variety of different formats, but by far the most popluar isTexas Holdem.
The popularity of Texas Holdem has grown steadily throughout the 20th century, and enjoyed a surge in
the 2000s due to exposure on television, on the Internet, and in popular literature. Thanks to this, you will
find that the Texas Holdem tables are typically the most crowded tables in any online poker room or land
based gaming establishment. The No Limits betting style of Texas Holdem is used in the main event of the
prominent World Series of Poker (WSOP) competition.
In Texas Hold em, like all variants of poker, individuals compete for an amount of money contributed and
increased by the players themselves, this is called the pot. Because the cards are dealt randomly and
outside the control of the players, each player attempts to control the amount of money in the pot based
on the hand the player holds. The pot is then awarded to the player or players who have not folded, and
who have the best hand. This will usually be only one player, although it can be more in the case of a tie.
Playing a hand
The dealer uses a standard 52 card deck with no jokers, and after shuffling, deals two cards face down to
each player. These cards are know as the player's hole or pocket cards. These are the only cards each
player will receive individually, and they will be kept secret until the end of the hand, where they will be
revealed at the showdown, making Texas hold 'em a closed poker game. It is not compulsory, however, for
a player to reveal their cards if no other players are left after the river or final card of the hand is dealt.
At the start of every hand, a Dealer Chip is used to represent the player in the dealer position; the dealer
button is rotated clockwise round the poker table after each hand, changing the position of the dealer and
blinds. The Small Blind is posted by the player to the left of the player holding the dealer chip and is
usually equal to half of the big blind. The Big Blind, posted by the player to the left of the small blind, is
equal to the minimum bet. A round of betting continues until every player has either folded, matched the
amount put in by all other active players or put in all of their chips. Note that the blinds are considered
"live" in the pre-flop betting round, meaning that they contribute to the amount that the blind player must
contribute, and that, if all players call, around to the player in the big blind position, that player may either
check or raise. After the pre-flop betting round, assuming there remain at least two players taking part in
the hand, the dealer deals a flop, which is three face-up community cards from the remainder of the pack.
The flop is followed by a second betting round. This and all subsequent betting rounds begin with the
player to the dealer's left and continue clockwise.
Once all the players have either checked (not raised the amount bet), bet or raised, the flop betting round
ends. Then a single community card, called the turn, is dealt. This is followed by a third betting round. A
final single community card, known as the river, is then dealt, followed by a fourth betting round. When all
the betting action is over and, if two or more players still remain in the game, they are required to reveal
their hands in order to establish the winner. This is the final stage of the game and it is called the
showdown. The Texas Holdem poker player with the strongest five card hand, comprising his pocket two
cards and the Community Cards (the five by now exposed cards placed in the middle of the table for all
players to use), takes the pot. If more than one player share the best five card hand, then the jackpot is
divided equally among them
In all casinos, the dealer will discard, or 'burn', a card before each flop, turn, and river. This is to prevent
players who are betting from seeing the back of the next community card to come, which might be marked.

Royal Flush: Five card sequence from 10 to the Ace in the same suit (10,J,Q,K,A).
Straight Flush: Any five card sequence in the same suit. (eg. 8,9,10,J,Q or A, 2,3,4,5 of same suit). All cards are of the same suit, and all are consecutive. Ranking between straights is determined by the value of the high end of the straight.
Four of a Kind: All four cards of the same index (eg. J,J,J,J).
Full House: Three of a kind combined with a pair (eg. A,A,A,5,5). Ties on a full house are broken by the three of a kind, as you cannot have two equal sets of three of a kind in any single deck.
Flush: Any five cards of the same suit, but not in sequence. Don't be tricked into thinking that all five cards are the same color. The high card determines the winner if two or more people have a flush.
Straight: Five cards in sequence, not in the same suit. A straight cannot wrap, meaning it is not a straight if you have a Q, K, A, 2, 3. If two or more people have a straight, the higher straight wins.
Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value. The highest set of three cards wins.
Two Pair: Two seperate pairs (eg. 4,4,Q,Q). As usual the pair with the higher value is used to determine the winner of a tie.
Pair: One pair of two equal value cards constitutes a pair.
High Card: If no one has any of the above winning hands, the tie is determined by the highest value card in the hand. If the highest cards are a tie then the tie is broken by the second highest card. Suits are not used to break ties.
